How do we read the sky—and who taught us how? Directors Hugo Haddad and Isadora Canela pose this question in their poetic exploration of Indigenous astronomy across Brazil. At its centre is Professor Germano Afonso, an Indigenous-descendant astrophysicist whose work is dedicated to documenting and preserving ancestral celestial knowledge. Haddad and Canela weave his lectures together with conversations among Elders, healers and community leaders who read the stars through generations of lived experience. Beautifully shot and accented with a rich soundscape, this immersive film invites viewers to reconsider the cosmos—not as something distant, but as a living system of understanding embedded in land, language and daily life. Midway through, the film takes a more reflective turn, becoming a quiet tribute to a life devoted to protecting this legacy, and to those continuing the work. Solar Shadow is less a conventional science film than a meditation on knowledge itself: who defines it, how it is passed on, and what is lost when certain ways of understanding the world are pushed aside.
